In May 1959 the MGA was given an updated engine, now at 1588 cc producing 79.5 bhp; 31,501 were produced in less than three years. Externally the MGA 1600 is very similar to its predecessor, with only a few minor cosmetic changes of note.
In 1960 the engine size was increased again to 1622 cc by increasing the bore from 75.4 mm (2.97 in) to 76.2 mm (3.00 in) for the 1961 Mark II MGA. The cylinder head was also revised with larger valves and re-engineered combustion chambers that lead to an increased power output of 90 bhp. It also had a higher ratio 4:1 rear axle, which made for more relaxed high-speed driving. An inset grille and Morris Mini tail lamps appearing horizontally below the deck lid were the most obvious visual changes. 8,198 Mark II roadsters and 521 coupes were built.
This particular MK2 MGA 1600 Coupe is surely one of the finest examples available. It was the recipient of a full body-off, nut and bolt restoration by Bob West – the MGA specialists based in West Yorkshire. The restoration included all new trim with hand-made aluminium panels, a bespoke head lining, grey carptes and retrimmed black/red leather seats. The original front grille was re-chromed, whilst other parts were replaced with all new components. The body was also fully re-painted in 2001, and is still in exceptional condition without any notable marks, scuffs or chips.
The engine and drivetrain also received significant attention, with a huge amount of work done by Don Loughlin – the engine rebuilding and reconditioning specialists based in Kidderminster. The rebuild included a new cam shaft, new MGB type clutch, ported and polished head, reconditioned carburettors, a fully reconditioned differential, new brake and much more besides (details of which are on file). A huge number of photos of the restoration are included with the extensive history file.
Following this extensive restoration, this particular MGA 1600 Coupe has covered just 1522 miles, and now wants for nothing. It has been the proud recipient of several awards including: Car of the Show at MGCC Sledmere; Best MGA at MGCC Sledmere (twice); Best MGA at MGOC Harrogate; Car of the Show at Doncaster Traditional Car Club Hickerton Hall.
The car is now available for viewing at The Classic Motor Hub, and is highly-recommended for immediate inspection by anyone in the market for a MGA 1600.
